Time flies when you're having fun, right? Have you ever wondered what is really happening there? Why would time seem to go faster when you are "having fun?" Is this some sort of cruel joke, in which the rules of the Universe were set in such a way as to extend our most boring, painful, or difficult times, and yet cause our most enjoyable times to fly by in a flash?
A deep understanding of this question is foundational to an understanding of the Slowpoke Perspective.
Studies of the nature of light, the mystery of consciousness, the wonderful complexity and unpredictability of biology and physics, the richness of literature, and the ability of music to influence emotion, have led me to a conclusion. This conclusion explains, for me at least, why time seems to fly when we are having fun. Here it goes...
We are all travelling on a tide, which is a sum total of countless individual waves and ripples. We call this tide "TIME." We have beliefs about this tide, and our beliefs about such a fundamental aspect of our existence are difficult for us to change. We learn that time marches on. We learn that time heals all wounds. We learn that a minute in the dentist's chair feels like an hour, and we learn that our children grow up in a flash.
Many of the things we learn about time seem to indicate that our state of mind or emotional state influences the passage of time, or at least the perception of such. Einstein's theory of general relativity agrees with this concept, as you will see in a moment. In spite of evidence suggesting that our perception, or consciousness, can influence the passage of time, we have yet to embrace collectively the idea that we have some control over how we experience this tide. So far, at least from what I can observe, humans seem to hold on tightly to a powerless relationship with time, as its slave, rather than its partner. I hope in some small way that I can help a few people change that.
So let's get to the good stuff!
